  • Big Brake Kit for Ford F150 (99-03) 2WD

This threaded is created to discuss the development of a BBK for Ford F150 97-03 2WD which has an integrated rotor and hub as opposed to 4WD and some newer models having hub bearing attached to the spindle, which limits the brake upgrade due to the hub bearing, so enthusiasts are looking to break up the bearing hub from the rotor, so to assemble the hub bearing to the spindle like 4WD and the newer models

Here is Ford's SVT (Special Vehicle Team) website describing the specs including brakes

    Front rotor: 308x26mm (This is for a 2WD) 5x M14x1.5 Lug bolts @135mm (5.31") pcd
Rear rotor: 334x14mm (This is the common rear non-ventilated disc)

    The front spindle (e-Bay):

This is wonderful! Thank you again for taking the time to look at this platform and possibly build some type of affordable BBK. I don't see why you couldn't.

        Post from user on Facebook.

Id like to see a rear brake set up that can fit race star 15x10" wheels without grinding. And on those brakes, I'd like the rotors and pads to be available at regular auto parts stores. That way, if I have a failure, I don't have to wait 3-5 business days for my replacements to come in.

I too would be interested in a set of rear brakes that would clear the 15x10.5" Darkstars on an 01 Lightning.

A BBK for Ford F150 Front fits under 17" wheel - The smallest brake kit can possible be made in fitting OE's large hub.

As you can see, the BBK options for our platform are well above the $2k mark. Buyers are looking for a cheaper (not in quality) option without having to spend $2k plus. There's also a portion of the buyers who are looking for a front or rear brake setup that will work with aftermarket 15" wheels without having to grind the caliper to fit the 15" wheel. These buyers are looking for an alternative to the Aerospace kits that are currently made for the Lightning. Only option available for Drag Racing is the Aerospace kit.

Here's what buyers are looking for:
                    • 15" or 16" kit that is a complete bolt on for 20" wheels (SportMachines Replica's, LMR Replica's or aftermarket)
                    • 14" kit that is a complete bolt on for stock 18" wheels
                    • 13" kit that is a complete bolt on for 17" wheels (Race Star, Centerline..etc)
                    • Front Drag Racing kit that is a complete bolt on for 15" wheels (Bogart, Race Star) (Some will run this kit with a 17" wheel)
                    • Rear Drag Racing kit that is a complete bolt on for 15" wheels. No grinding of the caliper to clear a 15" wheel. (Bogart, Race Star) (Some will run this kit with a 16" or 17" wheel)

Ah, I had to read your last post again. What you are saying is a 13" rotor kit is the smallest BBK that will work with the OE hub. Actually, a hub from a 4X4 application since our hub/rotor is integrated.

We know it's possible since Aerospace makes a kit. For the Drag Racing Buyers, a new hub would need to be machined to have a rotor size smaller than a 13" rotor. It sounds like it can be done. It's just a matter of whether you want to offer that option to the buyers.

The following illustration explains why 13" (330mm) rotor kit is the smallest can be made to fit OE hub (attached to spindle type eg 4WD):

Click image for larger version Name:	Front Hub.PNG Views:	0 Size:	65.5 KB ID:	10329

For those who are capable and willing to modify (cut down) the hub dia to about 160mm, or adapted to aftermarket bearing bub then a down size brake kit fitting 15" wheel might be possible with 280/290mm rotors which are similar to those brake kits we offered for Miata MX5, WRX, and S2000 track cars but bear in mind that those lug bolt center are smaller at 100 or 114.3mm (vs. F150's 135mm)

Do you know if anyone running 15" wheels have changed to smaller hub with 100 or 114.3mm lug bolt center which actually can be more cost effective (rim and tire) to run than 135mm

Assume the hub bearing can be converted to 114.3mm (with reduced hub OD), we have a 280mm rotor kit offered for Miata 2016+ (w/100mm pcd) which is a typical brake kit for 15" wheel.

Can anyone help to use the template & check against the 15" wheels for F150.

Yes, I believe one Racer has done just that.

                              From the forum.

"I did, aerospace made me some Lightning hubs with 4.5 x 5". The Aerospace kit is a 11.75" rotor with a 4 piston caliper.
